The 1,000 -day protest board in Parandur against the Greenfield project.
While the Government of Tamil Nadu prepares to issue a tender to build the Parandur Greenfield airport near Cennai, on Sunday it marked day number 1,000 of the Aldeanos protest in and around the region against the project of ₹ 20,000 million rupees.
Despite the rehabilitation and resettlement package, the villagers have gathered to protest, stating that the project would affect their livelihood. Those against the project say that the proposal project includes large portions of water bodies and agricultural land, that is, lands that are not for development and families that depend on agriculture will be displaced without future opportunities for livelihoods.
Threat of livelihoods
The Project Group of the Parandur Green Airport and the residents of the Village of Ekanapuram, the residents and the Federation of Welfare of the Farmers have urged both the State and the Center to leave the project. The Federation said the project would affect 13 villages, including Ekanapuram, Nelvoy, Valathur, Ediayarpakkam, Madapuram and Akammapuram that surround Parandur. While sustenance is an important problem, there are discrepancies in the data provided by Tamilnadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (Tidco), the Center and the Government’s order in the project, the groups said.
However, state government sources say that the agreement offered to those affected, as part of the resettlement and rehabilitation package, was very good. “We will order the problems with the Sonoon of the villagers,” they said.
Since the center has given its authorization for the construction of the project, it will soon enter the next tender stage. The second Chennai airport can handle 10 passengers annually; It will have two tracks, terminal buildings, filming streets, apron and a load terminal. The need for the airport arises because Chennai airport drives about 2.2 million people annually. After the current modernization work, he can handle 3.5 million people annually for the next seven years.
Confident to move forward with the project, the state government is considering a regional rapid traffic system (RT) to the planned airport in Parandur. Two runners will be studied to establish the RRTS – Chennai airport for Parandur through Srperumbudur and from Chennai to Parandur through Kancheepuram and Velore through Parandur.
