The authorities are the battery of the 53 -year -old politician with alleged ties with the rebel group M23 backed by Rwanda.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC) suspended the political party of former Joseph Kabila and ordered the seizure of its assets, to the 53 -year battery of high treason about alleged links with the rebel group M23 backed by Rwanda.
In a statement on Saturday afternoon, the Interior Ministry of the country said that the Kabila Popular Party for reconstruction and democracy (PPRD) was suspended for its “ambiguous attitude” towards the occupation of the territory of the RDC by M23.
The M23 rebellion has revived violence in the Eastern provinces rich in minerals of the RDC, where the conflict rooted in the spill of the Rwanda genocide in 1994 and the fight for control or minerals has persisted for decades.
The fight has killed Miles and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, according to the United Nations. The M23 also has two important cities, rubber and bukavu, in the east since the beginning of the year.
The president of the RDC, Felix Tshisekedi, accused Kabila or the preparation of “an insurrection” and supports an alliance that includes M23.
In another statement, the DRC Ministry of Justice said that Kabila and the assets of other party leaders would be seized after acts equivalent to high betrayal.
Both statements said prosecutors had received instructions to initiate procedures against them, but there were no details of the accusations. It is understood that no formal charges have been presented.
There have been no direct comments from Kabila, who ruled the country from 2001 to 2019.
However, his spokesman Barbara Nzimbi wrote in X that the former president would address the nation “in the next hours or days.” PPRD secretary Ferdinand Kambere told the Reuters news agency that the suspension amounted to “a flagrant violation” of the constitution of the RDC.
The measure to suspend the Kabila party follows the reports that have returned to the country after spending two years in South Africa. Kabila left the RDC before the last presidential elections in 2023.
According to the Interior Ministry, he has traveled to rubber, but his presence there has not confirmed the leg independently.
Kabila, a former military officer, came to power at the age of 29 years after the murder of his father, Laurent-Dielle Kabila, duration of the Second War of Congo.
He won elections in 2006 and 2011 that were tarnished by accusations of fraud and human rights abuses. After two years of mortal protests and a growing international pressure, the power delivered to Felix Tshisekedi in 2019, an acclaimed transition as the first peaceful delivery of the country’s power since independence in 1960.
Earlier this month, Kabila said his return was driven by the desire to help resolve the country’s political and security crisis. In an interview with Jeune Afrique, he said he expected “playing a role in searching for a solution after six years of complete retirement and a year in exile.”
The suspension of the Kabila party occurred when peace conversations between the Government of the RDC and the M23 rebels were postponed, which would take place in April.
The UN and several regional governments have accused Rwanda of supporting M23, an accusation strongly denied by the president of the country, Paul Kagame.
