The lawyer of a school district of Maryland and the judge of the Supreme Court of the United States, Neil Gorsuch, had a wild exchange this week about a children’s book in the middle of a continuous case presented by parents who wish to opt for their children publishing LGBTQ.
Gorsuch asked Alan Schoenfeld, the lawyer who represents the public schools of Montgomery County, about “Pride Puppy!” A 32 -page book that tells the story of a family that celebrates pride day when your dog is lost in the parade and the effort to gather the puppy with their loved ones.
The alphabet book that Rhyming, which was described as “affirmative and inclusive” by its editor, allows readers to detect elements that begin with each of the letters of the alphabet while offer “a cheerful glimpse of a parade of pride and yes.
The book was previously used in the study plan prior to the childhood of the district.

“And are they being used in English instruction at 3 years?” Gorsuch asked.
“Puppy pride!” It was the book that was used for the pre-infantile curriculum.
“That is the one who is supposed to look for leather and things, and slavery, things like that,” Gorsuch replied.
“It’s not slavery. She is a leather woman …”
A “sex worker?” Gorsuch asked.
“No. That is not correct. No,” Schoenfeld replied.

“God, I read it … Drag Queen?” Gorsuch said.
Schoenfeld said that the leather is actually a woman with a leather jacket and that “one of the words is Drag Queen.”
The Superior Court listened to arguments in the case presented by religious parents who say that young children cannot be expected to separate the moral messages from a teacher from their family’s beliefs.
Eric Baxter, the lawyer who represents Maryland’s parents in Mahmoud v. TaYlor told the judges that the school district violated the first amendment by denying the requests for exclusion of books that “contradict their religious beliefs”, even while allowing exemptions for other religious objections such as books they represent.

Baxter said the teachers had to use the materials in class after the district approved certain curricular books with LGBTQ themes in 2022.
“When the books were first introduced in August 2022, the Board suggested that five before the end of the year be used,” he said. “One of the schools, Sherwood School, in June of Pride said they will read a book every day.”
The initial district allowed parents to choose not to participate in their children for religious Conerns, but reversed the course in March 2023, citing concerns about absenteeism and administrative burdens.

Among the other story books in the center of the case is “Prince & Knight”, a modern fairy tale aimed at children from 4 to 8 years, which tells the story of two men who fall in love after the forces to defeat a tarragon and then marry.
Another book often reference to the duration of oral arguments was “Uncle Bobby’s wedding”, who follows a young woman who processes her favorite uncle’s decision to marry another man.
