Pope Francis, 88, was recently diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, and as Catholics worried worldwide pray for the Holy Father, the Vatican revealed last week that he will remain hospitalized to receive treatment.

BENEDICTO XVI (2005-2013)
Before Pope Francis was chosen by the Cardinals College in 2013, Pope Benedict XVI, born Joseph Ratzinger, directed the Catholic Church since 2005-2013.

Ratzinger was born in Bavaria, Germany. When witnessing the horrible acts of the duration of the Nazi regime, the desire to commit to the Church at an early age. Pope John Paul II (1978-2005)
Pope John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyła, was elected Pope on October 16, 1978. He was the first Polish pontiff.
Wojtyła took the regnal name after his predecessor, Pope John Paul I, who died only one month in his reign as the sovereign of the city of the Vatican.
The choice of Wojtyła by the Cardinals College marked the first time that an annualian would serve as a potato in 400 years. At 58, Wojtyła was one of the young potatoes in history.
Wojtyla studied theology in Rome and served as the Krakow archbishop. Through his 26 -year -old pontificate, John Paul II traveled to 129 countries, becoming the most traveled Pope in history.

In 1981, a lonely gunman, Mehmet Ali Ağca, tried to kill the Pope in the Plaza de San Pedro in the city of the Vatican. He was hit twice as he was traveling in an open and seriously injured car. He was urgently taken to the Gemelli hospital in Rome and treated for his wounds.
John Paul II later visited Aededeca in prison and forgave the shooter in person.
In 2005, John Paul died in his department in the Vatican at age 84. He was canonized as Santo in 2014.
Pope John Paul I (1978-1978)
Pope John Paul I, born Albino Luciani, was elected Pope on August 26, 1978. His reign as sovereign of the city of the Vatican was a letter, since he died 33 days later.
He was ordered in 1935, appointed Bishop in 1958 and created the archbishop of Venice in 1969. He is known as “the smiling Pope.”
Pope Paul VI (1963-1978)
Pope Paul VI was born Giovanni Battista Montini in Brescia, Italy. He was chosen as a pontiff in 1963 after being appointed Archbishop or Milan.
Duration of his papacy, Montini concluded three sessions of the second Vatican Council, a significant renewal of the Catholic Church. The official documents marked a milestone in the Church and condemned anti -Semitism.

Montini traveled to the Holy Land in the Middle East, India, Uganda, the Philippines and parts of the United States last their reign.
In 2018, Pope Paul VI was canonized as a saint. He was recognized as a strong leader, and his efforts to build stronger ties among other religions are cited as one of the reasons for his canonization.
Pope Paul VI died in 1978 at age 80.
Pope John XXIII (1958-1963)
Pope John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, was born in a family of 13 children in Sotto Il Monte, Italy.
In 1892, Roncalli entered the seminar. He was ordered in 1904 and was appointed Cardinal and the Patriarch of Venice in 1953.

As Pontiff, Roncalli convinced the second Vatican Council, which modernized the Catholic Church by renewing liturgy and theology and developing better relations with other religions.
Pope John XXIII died in 1963 and was canonized as a saint along with John Paul II in 2014.
PIO PIO XII (1939-1958)
Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Pacelli, was an Italian cardinal before being elected Pope in his 63rd birthday in 1939.
Pope Pius XI called Pacelli a cardinal after a one -day conclave between the Cardinals College in 1929.
Pacelli was World War II and through the Holocaust. The correspondence of the Vatican archives shows that Pacelli received the news of the atrocities that occurred against the Jewish people in Germany, and he received pleas to help the Jews.

Pope Pius XII has been intensely criticized by what has been called his lack of support for the duration of the Jews, World War II, but the Vatican has remained firm in his defense.
Pius XII died in 1958 at age 82.
PAPO XI (1922-1939)
Pope Pius XI, born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, was ordered priest in 1879. He was appointed Cardinal and Archbishop of Milan in 1921 by Pope Benedict XV and chose the Pope in 1922.

Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator, came to power in 1922. The Treaty of Lateran signed by Mussolini and the papacy recognized the papal superity over the city of the Vatican, which makes the State a neutral territory and the independent political pope.
Pío XI died in 1939 at age 81.
