Vedanta group firm HZL plans to foray into potash mining; eyeing block in Rajasthan

The signing of the Vedanta Hindustan Zinc LTD (HZL) group plans to enter potassa mining and is watching a block in Rajasthan what has a fair possibility of having lithium reserves too, said a senior company official.

India Heavy is based on potassa imports and has been exploring ways to reduce its dependence on imports. Potassa imports from India mainly come from countries such as Russia, Canada, Belarus and Israel.

The company also plans to expand beyond base metals (zinc and lead, and precious metal silver, as well as all critical minerals that are of strategic interest for the company.

Hindustan Zinc was declared as the preferred bidder for Dugocha Gold Block in Rajasthan, which resulted in the expansion of his portfolio or precious metals.

“So all critical mineral blocks, as I said, have gold … Block, we have a block of tungsten blocks. Therefore, the Hindustan zinc will expand beyond zinc, lead and silver.

“We will expand to all critical minerals, which is or a strategic interest for us, including not only minerals, including potash … Potash is there in Rajasthan … (there) also Chancans of Lithium Association there (in the potassa block). PTI.

Hindustan Zinc Limited received the Balepalyam Tungsten block in Andhra Pradesh.

He said the company is looking at the auction of all mineral blocks in the country and added that its Hindmetal Subsidiary Exploration Services PVT LTD, focused on strategic mineral minerals, always work.

“I am sure that they (the company) will turn out to be the largest private explorer in India,” he explained.

Hindustan Zinc LTD (HZL) on Friday reported an increase of 47.3 percent in the net gain consolidated to ₹ 3.003 million rupees in the quarter ending in March 2025, backed by a record volume of metal and a lower production cost.

The company had published a net gain of ₹ 2,038 million rupees in the previous year.

HZL is the largest integrated zinc producer in the world and is among the five main silver producers worldwide. The company supplies more than 40 countries and has a market share of approximately 77 percent of the primary zinc market in India.
