Hockey player involved in death of Adam Johnson won’t face charges

Matt Petgrave, the man arrested under suspicion of involuntary homicide after the death of the Hockey player Adam Johnson, will not face charges, British prosecutors said on Tuesday.

The Post New York informs that the Crown Prosecutor’s Office (CPS) decided not to accuse Petgrave, who was involved in the tragic collision with Johnson Duration, a game of hockey of the Steelers of Nottingham Panthers-Leffield Steelers on October 28, 2023.

Petgrave’s Skate cut the collision’s neck duration, which finally led him to his death.

South Yorkshire police arrested Petgrave two weeks after the incident, although they were not specific to who he was publicly. Then, Petgrave published an appeal of crowdfunding for legal fees, saying that he was the subject of a police investigation.

The CPS explained his reasoning not to accuse Petgrave, qualifying the situation “an impressive and deeply annoying incident.”

“The CPS and the South Yorkshire police have worked closely to determine if criminal charges must be presented against the other ice hockey player involved,” said the deputy prosecutor of the crown Michael Quinn crown, he said in Saint.

When the horrible incident took place, there was a debate on social networks about whether Petgrave collided with Johnson on purpose. But Johnson’s teammates supported Petgrave, and one says that “it is not the possibility of deliberately.”

The debate also caused the protection of ice hockey players, and the English ice hockey association quickly ordered neck protection for all players.

The announcement occurred two days after Johnson’s accident, since neck protection was mandatory from 2024.

Johnson played 13 games in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who honored him at the time of his tragic death.

“Pittsburgh penguins join the whole world of hockey to cry the life of Adam Johnson, whose tragic life ended too soon,” the team said in a statement. “We sacrifice our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Adam, as well as to all Adam’s attacks and their current companions and coaches. Adam will always be part of the Penguins family.”
