Many teenagers and young women increase weight in the years after breast reduction surgery, particularly those who were in a healthy body mass index (BMI) before surgery, reports an article in the February edition of Plastic and reconstructive surgery®, the official medical magazine of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASP). The magazine is published in the Lippincott portfolio by Wolters Kluwer.
“Our experience suggests that the BMI and the body have an upward trend after the reduction of Mamma Slange in adolescents and young women,” says principal author William N. Doyle Jr, a medical student at the University of Southern Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa. “These patients should be attacked for healthy changes in lifestyle to prevent weight gain.”
Monitoring data on weight changes after breast reduction surgery
The reduction breast can relieve weakening symptoms such as neck, back and shoulder pain and improve psychological well -being in women with sinuses with overspective (macromastia). Previous studies have raised the group that obesity can be a risk factor for higher rates of adolescents with macromastia. Many plastic surgeons encourage patients to lose weight before breast reduction surgery.
Some reports have suggested that the reduction breast leads to postoperative weight loss, perhaps relieve physical symptoms that exercise can hinder exercise. The new study examined the long -term changes in body weight in adolescents and young women subject to breast reduction surgery.
The study included 56 patients of 21 years or less (average of 18.6 years) who underwent a reduction breast between 2015 and 2019. Changes in body weight and BMI were presented in an average follow -up of 46 months. Before surgery, 28.6% of patients had an BMI in the healthy range (18.5 to 24.9 kilograms per square meter high). The rest had an initial BMI in the overweight (25.0 to 29.9 mg/m2) u obese range (30 kg/m2) or higher.
Tendency towards greater weight gain in women with an initial healthy BMI
In the follow -up, only 22 patients had a decrease in BMI: a rate or 39.3%. Body weight and BMI decreased slightly in the first year after breast reduction, but increased with longer tracking. Body weight increased by a median of three percent and BMI by five percent.
Among women with initially healthy BMI, both weight and BMI increased constantly. On the contrary, patients who initially had overweight had weight increases, while they were obese had no significant changes in body weight or BMI. With the adjustment of other factors, weight changes after breast reduction were not significantly related to the initial BMI, the patient’s age or the amount of tissue eliminated.
Why did these young women increase weight after the reduction of breast? Hormonal or metabolic changes after pubertation could play a role. “Another theory is that healthy lifestyle habits, including exercise and a balanced diet, are not established after the operation,” the researchers write. More studies on patient behavior and attitudes towards lifestyle change to explore thesis factors would be needed.
“Mamublasty reduction alone is not enough to stimulate sustained weight loss for
Adolescent women, regardless of their preoperative BMI classification, “conclude Mr. Doyle and co -authors. They propose that young women who submit to this procedure are aimed at measures to promote healthy lifestyles, ideally, follow -up of the fidisciplinary night with a primary care provider.
