The British and Irish lions will be on their way to Australia on the back of a storage, but what will they learn from their loss to Argentina and can it help them win a series under?

The side of Andy Farrell was defeated 28-24 by Argentina for a sold-out Aviva Stadium, where they were destroyed early in the second half in the 11-point backlog before they shot in the Pumas.

The score of a penalty and Tadhg Beirne after the break created a victory for the Lions, Argentina’s ruthless counter -inconsuming Santiago Cordero in for the match -winning attempt in the 59th minute.

1. Costly errors and poor execution

  • Andy Farrell admitted the team was “tentative” and committed too many unforced errors—mishandled passes, lost aerial duels, and sloppy lineouts

  • Tactical kicking from Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith was criticized; Argentina exploited territorial mistakes .

2. Discipline and decision-making under pressure

  • Overcommitment at the breakdown and conceding penalties hampered Lions momentum

  • Breakdown discipline and decision-making need sharpening before facing top-tier opponents

3. Cohesion and chemistry still developing

  • With just one outing together, combinations in midfield (e.g., Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu) lacked cohesion

  • Keith Wood highlighted the need for rapid team unity—no room for passengers

4. Argentina’s tactical clarity

  • The Pumas executed a precise, disciplined game plan: solid breakdown work, tactical kicking, and counter-attacks

5. A morale boost under pressure

  • Despite the loss, positives emerged: strong scrum performance, energetic substitutions, and vibrant fan support
