Many film enthusiasts and figures of the industry consider the annual award of the palm d’Or not only among the highest honors for artistic achievement in the world of cinema, but also an unofficial beginning of the following season of years, the special organization that gives the Oscar every spring, continues to court a more international vote.

In recent years, films that were thrown in Cannes have found more and more tremors in the Oscar hunt. In the last years of half boxes, two winners of Palma d’Or, “Parasite” by Bong Joon Ho and “Anora” of Sean Baker, have also achieved the Oscar for the best image. Before that, only “Marty” of 1955 and “The Lost Weekend” of 1945 managed to achieve the feat of winning both main awards.

A list of palm winners recently that at least were appointed for the Oscar of the best film includes “Anatomy of A Fall” by Justine Triet (2023), “Triangle of sadness” by Ruben Östlund (2022), Michael Haneke “and Terrence”. Last year’s Oscar Contenders list included more than a couple of titles that arrived in Cannes first, including “The Sustance”, “Emilia Pérez” and “The Ampprentice”.

Of the filmmakers in competition this year, Julia Ducournau and the Dardennes Brothers have won the palm d’Or in previous festivals, Ducournau for “Titane” and the Dardennes for both “such as” L’Ec Enfant. “The Dardennes are among a small group of filmmakers who have won twice.

Earlier this week, the organizers of the festival confirmed that Tom Cruise will return to the croisette with “Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning”, although they said that the film would be projected outside the competition. Cruise received an honorary Palma de Oro in 2022 when his movie “Top Gun: Maverick” is sent at the Cannes Festival of that year.

The organizers also announced that actor Robert de Niro will receive a palm of honorary duration of the opening ceremony.

This year’s festival extends from May 13 to 24.
