Storage in 65% of key Indian reservoirs below 50% of capacity

The storage level in the 161 main deposits of India further fell to 37 percent of the capacity with the level in almost 65 percent of them filled below 50 percent, showed data from the Central Water Commission (CWC).

The weekly data of the CWC deposit showed that the storage in the 161 deposits was 66,821 billion cubic meters (BCM) or the capacity of 182.38 BCM. Or these, the level in 78 of them was less than 40 percent, while it was less than 50 percent in 27.

Highest general storage

The storage in the southern, north regions and this was less than 40 percent, while it was less than 50 percent in western and central regions. However, general storage is higher than last year and normal (the last 10 years).

Of the 11 deposits in the northern region, the level was 23.16 percent of the capacity of 19,836 BCM to 4,593 BCM. Punjab and Himachal storage was less than 20 percent, while it was a little above 40 percent in Rajasthan.

In the 27 deposits of the eastern region, the storage was 35.65 percent or 7.72 BCM or the capacity of 21,655 BCM. Except Tripura, Jharkhand and Meghalaya, the level in the rest of the states was 40 percent of the capacity.

The storage in the four central states: MP, UP, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand, fell below 50 percent this week. The level in the 28 deposits was 43.39 percent of the capacity of 48,588 BCM to 21,084 BCM.

The 50 deposits in the western region were filled at 44.72 percent of their capacity of 37,357 BCM to 16,705 BCM. Goa’s lonely dam was filled above 50 percent, but reservoirs in Maharashtra and Gujarat had storage or 42 percent and 47 percent, respectively.

The storage in the 45 deposits in the southern region was 30.43 percent or 16,719 BCM or the capacity of 54,939 BCM. The level in Kerala, Andhra and Tamil Nadu was less than 30 percent, while it was approximately 30 percent in Karnataka and a sheet below 40 percent in Telangana.

With the meteorological department of India that predicts temperatures above normal in April and below the rain, the storage level will probably fall further.
