Central Myanmar shaken by new earthquake with 5.5 magnitude, in one of the biggest aftershocks since March 28 temblor

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 hit Sunday morning near Meiktila, a small city in the center of Myanmar, according to the United States geological service.

The earthquake occurred when Myanmar is dedicated to help efforts after a great templar of 7.7 magnitude that also reached the central region of the country on March 28.

The epicenter of the last earthquake was approximately the hall between Mandalay, the second largest city of Myanmar, which suffered huge damage and low in the earthquake last month, and Nyypyitaw, the capital, where Severnment offices were damaged.

The Department of Meteorology of Myanmar said that Sunday’s earthquake occurred in the area of ​​the municipality of Wundwin, 97 kilometers (60 miles) south of Mandalay, at a depth or 20 kilometers (12 miles). The United States geological service estimated the depth at 7.7 km (4.8 miles).

Two residents of Wundwin told Associated Press by phone that the earthquake was so strong that people left the buildings and that the ceilings in some homes were damaged. A Naypyitaw resident also arrived on the phone said he did not feel the last earthquake. The contacted asked not to be appointed for fear of angry the military government, which prefers to closely control the information.

Last week, the United Nations warned that the damage caused by the earthquake of March 28 worsened the existing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, where a civil war had already displaced more than 3 million people.

He said that the earthquake severely interrupted agricultural production and that a health emergency was assumed because many medical facilities in the earthquake zone were damaged or destroyed.

Sunday’s earthquake occurred on the morning of the first day of the three -day holidays of the country, which celebrates the traditional new year. The public festivities for the holidays had already been.
