South Korea announces over $23 billion for chip sector as Trump tariffs on semiconductor imports loom

South Korea announced on Tuesday a support package of 33 billion WON ($ 23.25 billion) for its vital semiconductor industry, since the uncertainty admitted to US tariffs threatens national companions.

This occurs after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, said he would announce the rate of the tariff on semiconductors imported during the next week, after exempting the issue of his steep “reciprocal” rates last Friday.

In a publication on social networks on Monday, Trump promised to investigate the “complete electronic supply chain” on national security land.

The United States Department of Commerce also published a notice saying that it will hint an investigation “to determine the effects on the national security of semiconductor imports, semiconductor manufacturing equipment and their derived products.”

The southern Korea financing support was approximately a quarter more than the 26 billion commitment last year, according to a press release from the Ministry of Finance.

As part of the measures, the Government will subsidize the construction of underground energy transmission lines to semiconductor groups, as well as increase the relationship for infrastructure in advanced industrial complexes to 50% from 30%.

A total of 20 billion profits of low interest to semiconductor companies between 2025 and 2027 will be offered, above the 17 billion current billion.

Other measures include the introduction of training and research programs for national master’s and doctoral students, as well as the Global Forign Talent research programs.

South Korea houses some of the world’s leading chips manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, with semiconductors a key export of the country.

On Tuesday, the South Korean Kospi Increased 0.68%, with Samsung up 1.07%and SK Hynix up to 0.17%.

In 2024, exports of South Korea semiconductors were $ 141.9 billion, only about 20% of exports of $ 683.6 billion in the country.

The United States is the second largest export destination for South Korea, with exports that increase 10.5% year -on -year to $ 127.8 billion in 2024, reaching a new annual maximum for the seventh consecutive year.

On Monday, the president of South Korea, Han Duck-Soo, said that Trump had instructed “his administration to carry out immediate fees negotiations with South Korea, the Yonhap local media cordination.
