Project to save canal in Nagpur ensures drinking water for 200 families, irrigation of crops

A project to save the Sawangi channel in Nagpur has improved the fertility of around 400 hectares of land and has benefited 200 families by providing drinking water and an uninterrupted supply of the critical resource for irrigation and cattle.

The project that was in February 2024 has now been completed with the widening and the dean of the elastic tension of the 4.11 km channel from the crest to the valley, improving groundwater levels and the standard of living for farmers, livestock and wildlife in the area.

The project aimed at addressing water scarcity in the area was part of a corporate social responsibility program (CSR) initiated by the logistics conglomerate All Cargo’s Group’s ARM Avashya Foundation in Collaboration Santha Sinchana Shadhavdhana Sinshavan Sanstha.

After the Tamaswada water conservation pattern, the project focused on the disillusion and restoration of the channel to guarantee the optimal storage of water and the prevention of soil erosion, said All Cargo Group in a statement.

He also said that the Sawangi channel project created 1,00,000 cubic meters of surface water storage and contributed annually 2.25,000 cubic meters of groundwater.

Appreciating the initiative, the Minister of the Union, Nitin Gadkari, who is also a member of the Parliament of the Constitution of Nagpur, said that the Maharashtra Vidarbha region needs more initiatives of this type to help prevent suicide of farmers. “I appreciate the role of the initiative in building the life of farmers and extend the best wishes for projects continuous success and lasting impact in the coming years.”

The founder and president of the group of Allcargo, Shashi Kiran Shetty, said: “We are played to address the shortage of water in the Vidarbha region and flourish the rural economy. Restoring water sources along with strengths, wetlands and forests.”
