The Government has appointed Mangi Lal Jat as general director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for a period of three years. He will also be ex officio secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (Dare) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Welfare of Farmers.

Currently, the Secretary of Agriculture is in charge of DG, Icar and Secretary, dares after the retirement of Himanshu Pathhak, who joined as DG, Icrisat in Hyderabad on March 6 after Icar’s voluntary retirement.
While agricultural scientists in ICAR can serve up to 62 years of age, the DG, ICAR, can continue up to 60 years, since the person also works as a secretary in the challenge.
According to the ICrisat website, Jat is an agronomist of well -recognized systems with approximately 25 years of rich experience in systems science worldwide. It has served for 12 years at the International Center for Improvement of Corn and Wheat (CIMMYT) as the main scientist/agronomist and system science strategy and one year at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). It has also served 12 years in the Indian Agricultural Research Council (ICAR) as a systems agronomist.
Jat has a doctorate in agronomy with a specialization in the conservation of soil moisture in the pearl of the rain of the Agricultural Research Institute of Icar-India (Iari), New Delhi.
