The IRS is considering that it will terminate Harvard UniversityThe tax exempt from taxes, two familiar sources with the situation said.

The request to analyze the possibility was made by officials of the Treasury Department this week. Main Lawyer Acting Andrew from MelloThat he has a bone that supports Doge and was designated for his role in March, recovered the application, said a source.

A final decision has not yet been taken, the sources said. CNN first reported the IRS consideration.

The oldest university in the country, such as an organization 501 (c) (3), like other educational institutions, is exempt from paying taxes.

In a statement, the White House spokesman Harrison Fields said that any “next action of the IRS will be carried out independently of the president.”

“Investigations on any violation of the institution of its fiscal state began before the president’s truth,” he added, referring to Trump’s position on Tuesday that he suggested that Harvard “must lose his tax exempt from taxes and be imposed as a political entity.”

“Remember, the tax -free state depends totally on acting in public interest!” Trump wrote in Truth Social on Tuesday.

CBS News has communicated with the Treasury and IRS department to comment.

A Harvard spokesman said that “there is no legal basic to terminate Harvard’s state of fiscal existence.”

“The Government has long exempted tax universities to support their educational mission,” said Harvard spokesman. “Tax exemption means that more of each dollar can be used for students’ scholarships, medical research that comes out with life and that increase life and technological advances that drive economic growth.”

Bloomberg News estimated that Harvard saves almost $ 500 million a year as they are exempt from taxes.

This is the last in the splashes between Harvard and Mr. Trump. On March 31, the Administration said it was reviewing around $ 9 billion in subsidies and contracts with Harvard “to ensure that the University complies with federal regulations, including its civil responsibilities.” The Federal Government sent a letter on April 11 to the university that described a series of conditions that Harvard needed to meet to maintain a “financial relationship” with the federal government. Harvard rejected those conditions, which resulted in the Trump administration announcing On Tuesday, he would cancel “$ 2.2 billion in subsidies of several years and $ 60 million in contractual value of several years to Harvard University.”

The IRS has seen numerous changes in the first months of Mr. Trump’s mandate. The agency is expected to see steep cuts to its workforce in the coming months, according to a note of its reduction in the Force Plan Shared with CBS News.

Melanie KrauseThe former interim commissioner, resigned this month after the IRS reached an agreement with immigration officials to share tax or immigrants.

Mr. Trump replaced Krause with Gary ShaleyThat he had been a complainant regarding an alleged political influence on Hunter Biden’s fiscal investigation.
