An earthquake that measures 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Afghanistan on Saturday morning, with tremors senses in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the officials of the Department of Meteorology, the epicenter was located in the border region of Afghanistan-Tajikistan, at a depth or 86 km. The earthquake occurred in latitude 36.13 ° N and length 71.38 ° E.

While the tremors felt in several areas of J & K, there have been no reports of victims or damage to property. However, the authorities closely monitor the situation. People left their homes and panic offices after the tremors felt. The residents said they felt tremors for several seconds. They published on social networks about their experience and shared their with everyone with their close relatives.

Kashmira is in an active seismicular zone and has witnessed earthquake devastating in the past.

On October 8, 2005, an earthquake of similar magnitude – 5.9 on the Richter scale – hit the region at 8.50 am, the epicenter was in Muzaffrabad, which was razed to the rubble, and the disaster charged around 80,000 lives on both sides of the LOC).

Experts have long debated the vulnerability of the regions. Traditional Kashmir structures made of mud, wood and brick were considered more resistant to the earthquake compared to cement concrete buildings built in the last seven decades.

The Chenab Valley region, including the districts of Doda, Kishwar, Ramban and Readi, has experienced a frequent seismic activity in the last decade. Several residential and governmental buildings suffered structural damage that increased episodes, which caused the relief and rehabilitation efforts of the authorities.

While some seismologists warn about a possible earthquake in the future, others argue that predicting such events remains scientifically unfeasible.
