The Government has acquired 3,40,000 tons of Tur (Pigeon Pea) so far this year under the price support scheme (PSS), according to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Tur’s acquisition is carried out at a minimum support price (MSP) under the scheme. The Ministry has sanctioned 13.22 Lakh Tons of Tur’s acquisitions of nine states.
The Government aims to maintain a damping stock of 10 Lakh Tons of Tur to release in the open market to verify prices.
According to the Ministry data, Tur Acquisitions has reached 3,40,000 tons on April 13.
Karnataka has contributed most of the acquisition in 1,30,000 tons, with the farmers there receiving a state bonus or ₹ 450 per quintal above the MSP or ₹ 7.550 per quintal.
Other contributing states include Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
The Government has also acquired 17,000 tons of Chana (gram) mainly from Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.
Despite the 27 Lakh tons or procurement of Chana, the purchase remains slow as internal prices exceed the MSP or ₹ 5,650 per quintal after the imposition of an import tariff of 10 percent.
The acquisition of Masur (lentil) has reached 28,700 tons and Moong (green gram) axis of 3000 tons or April 13.
The PSS enters when market prices of certain agricultural products fall below the MSP.
In the 2025 budget, the Government promised 100 percent acquisition of Tur, Masur and Urad in relation to state production through central agencies until 2028-29 to achieve self-sufficiency in pulse production.
Despite the increase in national production in recent years, India continues depending on imports to satisfy shortage in the supply of national pulses.
