The Ministry of Energy has addressed the imported electricity power plants (ICB) to work for optimal capacity until June 30, 2025, in advance of the increase in energy consumption of India, which reaches a high duration in the summer months, from April to June.
Previously, the Ministry had ordered ICB plants that work at full capacity until April 30, which has now extended until June 30, 2025, as has been regular practice in recent years.
The sources said that the mandate has now become a regular practice for April-June, as well as killing August-ao-October when the energy demand increases due to the warm and humid climate that the cooling application presents.
According to the National Energy Portal, national electric power plants based on coal (DCB) with around 194 Gigavatios (GW) have national stocks of 53.34 million tons (MT) and stocks imported to 9.75 tons of 2.76 Tm per day.
Plant capacity
ICB plants with almost 18 GW capacity and daily consumption of 1.82 LT per day, have a domestic stock of 36,300 tons and imported stocks or 2.34 TM. Six ICB plants have critical stocks.
India thermal imports rose to a maximum of 10 months in March 2025 with the electricity sector that stores supplies for the summer season that is coming with the maximum demand for electricity (day) that has already reached more than 230 GW.
The conformity with the global data provider and Kpler real -time analysis analysis, the purchases of foreign thermal coal of India, generally acquired by the electricity sector, increased by 10 percent of MOM to 14.16 mt provisionally. However, imports decreased by more than 2 percent annually.
The highest import requirement is also reflected in the government’s direction towards ICB power plants to execute capabilities at optimal levels.
