It’s time again for the Boston Marathon! The 2025 edition of the race runs on Monday, April 21 with the Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri, who strives for its third consecutive victory in the iconic race. The athletes start the course in Hopkinton, Massachusetts at 9:06 am etc. When the men’s wheelchair division starts and the event is broadcast nationally at ESPN2.
Start and end times
Obiri and the rest of the professional women get to work at 9:47 am et. They will be the fifth group that exceeds the starting line. After the men’s wheelchair division starts the race at 9:06, the Women’s Rolsteld Division follows at 9:09 am et. The full list of starting times is as follows:
- Men’s wheelchair: 9:06 am
- Ladies wheelchair: 9:09 am
- Handcycles and duos: 9:30 am
- Professional men: 9:37 am
- Professional women: 9:47 am
- For athletics division: 9:50 am
- Golf 1: 10:00 am
- Wave 2: 10:25 am
- Wave 3: 10:50 am
- Wave 4: 11:15 am
We do not know exactly when the first runners will exceed the finish line, but we can give Subje estimates based on recent end times. Last year, wheelchair racer Marcel Hug set a course record with a time of 1:15:35, where he decorated his previous course record in 2023 of 1:17:06. He won the race seven times and four of his five most recent victors all came in less than 80 minutes. He is back and strives for his eighth victory. If he races in something near the same time, he will be the first to exceed the finish line about Boylston Street near Copley Square everywhere around 9:26 am
Last year Sisay Lemma surprised the field of professional men with a time of 2:06:17. I had the race in 2017 DNF’d and this was his first time back. The last three races you have finished the winner in less than 2:07, with Benson KiproTo performing it in 2:09:51 in 2021. That would suggest that the first professional will exceed the finish line just before you are ready at or under 2:25. Due to a similar finish time, the first professional woman would exceed the finish line a bit after noon.

Course card
The full course card is shown below and you can also view the Boston Marathon website. The starting line is on Main Street in Hopkinton. The runners follow route 135 for 13 thousand in Wellesley where it becomes a member of Route 16. They will follow Followton Newton Lower Falls before they become Commonwealth Avenue just after the 17th miles. Just after completing the 20th mile, Heartbreak Hill arrives to give the last major test of the race. The runners turn to Beacon Street in the 23rd miles, who bring it through Brookline to Boston. The end of the race comes with a bend to Hereford Street and the A left on Boylston Street with the finish line near the Boston Public Library on Copley Square.
Weather
The circumstances have become rough over the years, but this year it should be almost ideal walking conditions. The start of the race in Hopkinton will be in the high 40s when the first athletes get to work. It will probably be about 50 when the professionals get to work, and in the middle of the High 50s by the time the last waves get started.
When the first runners respond the finish line near Copley Square, the temperatures must be in the Low 50s. It comes in the high 50s and maybe 60s for late runners, but not much than that, which ensures an excellent day of running.
Prize money
The Boston Marathon divides the prize money equally between the men and women division. The winners of the Open Division will each hind $ 150,000. The winners of the wheelchair department T53/54/34 will each take $ 50,000 again. The winners of the wheelchair division T51-52 will each repeat $ 1500. The winners of the Masters Division will each experience $ 5,000.
The full list of prize money is available on the Boston Marathon website.
What are the favorites to win the Boston Marathon from 2025?
Hellen Obiri seems to be the first woman since the 1990s who claims three straight Boston Marathon titles. She came from an injury to win the Olympic bronze medal last summer and finished second in the New York City Marathon last fall. Sharon Lakedi finished second in her first run in Boston last year and won the 2022 New York City Marathon. She will be in the New York Half Marathon in March. Emma Bates was the best American woman last year and should see subcompetition of winner Desiree Linden 2018.
On the men’s side, Evans Chebet is looking for recovery after missing a Threepeat last year. I am third and was then omitted from Kenya’s Olympic team. Sisay Lemma is the defending champion in only Boston’s second performance, but given his upset it can still cost a surprise to take home first place. Conner Metz is the best American to follow on Monday.
