The 29th season of the WNBA started this weekend, which led to a crowded series of exciting competitions. Although the first victories and lose nothing too exaggerated, especially now that the W has been expanded to the 44 game season, there are still few takeways to be available.
Let’s dive into three of the most popular look after opening the weekend:
Paige Bueckers have submitted a serious Roty competence
Paige Bueckers entered her Rookie Wnba season as a newly beaten NCAA champion and the number 1 general choice in the design. While she went to Dallas to start her season with the wings, the Rookie of the Year Specacie was already on a fever.
On paper it has a solid thing (and will continue to have): she is an incredible shooter, passer -by and basketball spirit in a team where she will have an immediate impact. She was the best talent in the design, given her unanimous projection as the number 1 prospect before she was finally selected. But is she a Rookie of the Year Slot? Perhaps, but the sum of the other newcomers supports this weekend that at the end of the season it might not be a cut-and-dry mood.
All eyes were focused on Washington this weekend when the mystics went 2-0 in their first two games. Wide projected as one of the lottery teams of the competition this season, it was surprising to summarize that they were Uble not to win one, but open the season about their games. The first was Agaless Atlanta, when they got the best of the new look dream in a tight game. Then they were Uble to beat the Connecticut sun in their more likely victory of the weekend. However, what stood out in both games was the piece of the rookies of the Mystics.
Washington stated Sonia Citron No. 3, Kiki Iriafen No. 4 and Georgia Amore No. 6 in the first round of the design last month. Unfortunately, Amore suffered an ACL interest only a few days in the training camp and will not play this season, but Citron and Iriafen already have an impact. In their match against the dream, Citron scored 19 points and took 2 rebounds to go with 2 assists while they only call 1 call. She shot 2-2 from distancy and 6-7 (85.7%) from the field. She followed that up in Sunday’s game with 15-point performance, with 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 rebound and 1 block.
While Iriafen only scored 4 points in her WNBA debut against Atlanta, polluting from the game (as is usual with players of the front-catt who adapt to the officials of the WNBA), she followed it with a game match against the Sun. On Sunday, Iriafen had 17 points 14, rebounds and 1 block while he shot 70% out of the field. And with the amount of minute before Mystics Rookies will play this season, given the state of the Washington schedule, Eithher player was able to earn a serious place in the Roty interview.
Now it is not as if Bueckers had no good debut. She scored 10 points together with adding 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block against Minnesota on Friday. She Shot 3-10 from the field, but it is difficult to judge hard in the first game. She has to play a second game like the Mystics, but the makeup of the wings is also different. Hopefully their new coach Chris Koclanes will only be testing things for the time being, but in the end the attack should run more by Bueckers, Arike Ogunbowale and Maddy Sieglist instead of how things were going against Minnesota.
It is early, but I suspect that Citron, Iriafen and Bueckers will all be in the Roty conversation that this season does not seem so bad.
Napheeesa Collier could win MVP

Another race that is tight this season is for the MVP price. Last season A’ja Wilson ran away in June o July, but in a year in which she did not play a legendary, competition -historical hoops, Collier would have been there with her. Now Wilson Cetainly could continue to play at the same level that she played last year when she had an average of 26.9 points per game from League record per game. Nevertheless, Napheeesa Collier Coul also rises to that level and Wilson give subcompetition for the top player in the WNBA.
In the first match of Minnesota against Dallas, Collier scored 34 points at 10-18 shooting from the field and added 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Minnesota won that game 99-84 in a pretty dominant fashion. In their second game against LA, Collier scored 23 points on 12-21 shooting with 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block, which helped the Lynx 89-75 to win over the Sparks. Las Vegas has only had one match this season so far, but Wilson scored 31 points on 11-22 shooting, along with 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Yet the aces that match against New York, 92-78.
If Collier and Wilson are so close when it is time to vote for MVP, the records of their teams can come into play. Voters tend to turn to victories and losses as tiebreakers when they decide to cast a vote, which could give Collier a lead if she and the Lynx continue their revenge season run.
The New York Liberty is Somohow even better than last season

Speaking of the New York Liberty who beat the aces … Freedom looks good. Like, maybe even better than last season, good. In 2024, the Liberty spent most of the season on the rankings, reached the final of the Commoner’s Cup and of course won the WNBA championship. In the low season they will return to Natasha Cloud and Broucht Marine Johannes after missing the 2024 season (under OTH movements).
Unfortunately, freedom is missing this season on the part of their core, because Betnijah Laney-Hamilton is out with an insurer, but they have still built an incredibly strong team that is ready to defend their trophy.

Wolksems are a large part of this urge to back-to-back rings and brings a lot of energy to freedom on and next to the field. We know that players tender to play a little more freely when they are in an environment they enjoy, and Boy, Cloud enjoys being in Brooklyn. The fans also love her and were extremely loud for her in her debut with the Liberty. She scored 22 points to go with 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks in the liberty victory over the Azen.
Breanna Stewart Sems to be in good shape after she had undergone a reach of her knee in March, and it is nice to see that she is Uble to play without pain. Stewart scored 25 points at 10-14 shooting from the field and took 8 rebounds to deal with her 3 assists in Saturday’s victory.
Natasha Cloud calls the freedom of Liberty at home “exciting” and credits the fans as a sixth player on the field.
Cloud was also asked her reaction protection a three -point game that ignited the crowd:

The overwhelming collection meal of Saturday’s statement against the Azen is that the Liberty looks rejuvenated. The energy was high in the team and it turned out. Their defense was great too, and their approach seemed to bake the lines of “well, we may not be uble to stop at Wilson 30-part, so let’s stop everyone before.” It worked pretty well, given the next highest score after Wilson Jackie Young was 16, and the only other aces in double figures were Chelsea Gray with 12 and Dana Evans from the bank with 10.
If this is how the Liberty plays against a team like De Azen, they can be on their way again this season to rule the WNBA.
