Nico Harrison is still defending the Luka Doncic trade after Mavs’ nightmare season

Nico Harrison has made it clear: he does not regret the Luka Doncic trade, not even after the end of the Nightmare of the Dallas Mavericks season. The top decision maker of the MAVs met the media on Tuesday for the second time since the Doncic Trade. Harrison Barred cameras and recording devices From the press session, but the quotes that come out are still shocking Glenn how bad the Maid trade played for the Mavericks.

Harrison repeated that there is no regret of trade maid. I followed the script for why he made the move: he believes that Defense is winning championships, and he did not think Doncic could be a reliable part of the future of Dallas on the supermax extension he was for the summer. In the hours after the Doncic Trade took place, Harrison leaked to the media that his philosophy is ‘Defense wins Championships’. Guess which rule he repeated on Tuesday?

Mavs GM Nico Harrison and CEO Rick Welts Jus has packed a one -hour session with selected members of the media based in Dallas.

“Defense wins championships” was the expression that was used most often.

Will have complete coverage @ESPN This afternoon.

– Tim Macmahon (@ESPN_MACMAHON) April 15, 2025

Subeone should tell Probabry Harrison that the MAVS had a better defensive assessment with Doncic this season than the DID with the player he was traced, big man Anthony Davis. Davis was injured in his first game with the MAVs, which is not exactly surprising for a player who had had his entire career injury, and had to deal with a belly stem when he was traded to the MAVs. From there it only got worse for Dallas, with several starters with injuries, including the devastating turn ACL from Kyrie Irving, who will linger well the following season. The mavs now or in the future have no hope thanks to the Doncian trade of Harrison.

Training Doncic For the package that Dallas returned was always an indefensible decision. It is clear that the leadership of MAV’s Mecely Waan performances is in terms of how they looked at Maid and how they approached the trade. When the disastrous outcome of the trade has so far insisted, Dallas CEO Rick Welts has led it in 2012 at the moment that another non -apopular trade has led: the Warriors that Monta Ellis act for Andrew Bogut.

.@tim_cato Said about @Dlls_mavs Die Mavs CEO Rick Welts compared the trade in Luka Dončić with the former team Warriors who traded in 2012 Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut.

Unbelievable from contact.

– Mavs Film Room (@Mavsfilmroom) April 15, 2025

There is simply no comparison between the two transactions. Ellis never made an All-Star team in his career. Doncic already had five first team All-NBA nods to his name at the age of 25, and he had just led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals 2024. Ellis was partially detected to free up space for an Ascendant Young Guard named Stephen Curry. The mavs have no one who can eat close by -what Luka does.

Do you want a better comparison for this trade? Try the Babe Ruth deal. He did not succeed so well for the Red Sox, even if head coach Jason Kidd thinks it is cool to hear the comparison.

Another problem that was linked to the trade was Maiden threatening Supermax Extension, a five -year contact of $ 346 million that Dallas did not want to pay him this summer. No player you have ever rejected a supermax contract, and Doncic in essence confirmed that he would sign it in the aftermath of the trade (he has no longer been chosen for the supermax since he was traded on the Lakers). Harrison said he did not guarantee that Doncic would sign the supermax, who feels like a lie of a raft. I was held on his guns even after Tim Macmahon from ESPN pushed back on him.

Macmahon: “Luka would sign the supermax. Why did you not sign it and the If You really dirty to exchange him” Nico: “Well, there is no guarantee that he had a supermax” Macmahon “Macmahon:” He led it, he was brought on the couch “Nico:” We are untheal !!!

There are many conspiracy theories about the maid trade, but it feels as if Harrison woold his team completely convinced to win a championship with Like Luka on the Roster. Harrison was a narrow employee of Kobe Bryant during his heyday, and he did not see Bryant’s murderer Mentity in Doncic as I offered to train out of the form.

Harrison is also out of his head here, but the most important thing is that he really promises. Here is the line that they will seriously seriously put on Harrison’s professional once he is fire.

Nico: “My obligation is for the Dallas Mavericks, it is what is the best importance of the Dallas Mavericks, and that is the most important thing.

– Tim Cato (@tim_cato) April 15, 2025

Harrison’s timing with this Media-Blitz was also bizarre, one day after the Dallas Paige Bueckers no. 1 generally prepared and a day before the MAVs play an elimination game in the NBA Play-in Tournament in the 9/10 matchup. Why couldn’t this wait until the season is not over?

NBA fans will talk about the Doncic Trade for decades. Harrison may still defend it, but it was a bad exchange when he made it, and it works in the short term.

If the MAVs want to win the goodwill of their fans, they have to start with Harrison firm. Anthony Davis’s actions would be a good next step, especially consideration. Kyrie Irving is the most or the entire next season. Harrison’s legacy is already safe: he is the man who has made the stupidest trade in modern sports history. Luka still writes his own legacy, and now that will be with the Lakers. The faster this ends, the better everyone will be.
