Florida man and his dog killed in first fatal black bear attack in state history

The Florida Fishing and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) confirmed on Friday that a man and his dog were killed by a black bear in Jerome, marked The first fatal black bear attack in the history of the state.

Family members reported that Robert Markel, 89, was missing at home and “signs of recent disturbances” that could have bone caused by a bear or bears around the property.

The Collier County Sheriff (CCSO) office notified FWC personnel on Monday of a possible fatal wildlife meeting, and the law management personnel and the Law of the FWC’s law immediately responded to ensure the area.

Markel’s remains were found about 100 yards from his house, along with the evidence of a “physical encounter” between a bear and a person near the house, according to an FWC press release.

The authorities also noticed that a dog was recently killed by a bear near a person, and there were signs that a bear had entered the house.

While the exact sequence of events is still clear, the policies and guidelines for the response to the human conflict of the FWC describe how the agency must respond when they face situations that require the elimination of a bear for public security.

From Monday night until Tuesday, FWC staff killed three adult male bears that weighed 207, 263 and 434 pounds, according to the launch.

There was a failed attempt to kick a fourth bear, but DNA evidence was collected, authorities said.

The three bodies were immediately tasks to laboratories in Gaineeville for necropsy and tests, along with the DNA samples collected from physical evidence on the scene.

FWC officials said that Collier County’s forensic doctor is still in the process of completing his investigation, but indicated that Markel’s preliminary cause was “consisting of injuries captivated by a black bear.”

The necropsy results revealed that a bear, the 263 -pound -man, contained Markel’s partial remains.

DNA results recovered on Friday, positively identified that the 263 -pound -man DNA was present in Markel, inside his house and in the dog’s body.

The only bear DNA found on the scene coincided with the three bears that were killed by the authorities.

The three bears were tested for rage, and all the results were negative, according to the officials.

The application personnel of the FWC law and bear management remains in contact with the family and maintained a presence near the property until Friday, seeing only an additional bear in the area.

The personnel of the law and management of bears will remain during the weekend.

“We want to thank the family for their cooperation while sailing for this challenging moment, and our thoughts remain with them,” said FWC president Rodney Barreto. “I am proud of the professional response and the support of our staff to the family, since they faced an unfathomable event this week.”

Jerome is located in the South Bear Management Unit, which has the third population of bears in the state, estimated at 1,044 in 2015.

The FWC received 16 calls related to the bear within a radius of 10 miles from Copeland nearby between May 5, 2024 and May 4, 2025, results in five visits to the site, five capture efforts, three bears that were relocated and novel, and a bear that was.
