As drug traffickers seek to innovate and market their product to the masses, some have begun to store their poison in “garbage cans”, small multicolored capsules that have replaced traditional roads.
The authorities have found them in Baltimore, New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. In Baltimore, some are being used to pack Fentanil, a deadly opioid that kills even in small quantities, according to a 2021 warning issued by the drug control administration (DEA).
In New York, drug traffickers have moved away from traditional packaging systems such as vials used to sell cocaine and other drugs, said Frank Tarentino III, the special agent in charge of the DEA’s office in New York.
“There was a time when cocaine was encapsulated in what we would call crack vials … We are seeing that it is replaced with these garbage or tops boats, or a superior type plastic that contains an illicit drug,” Tarentino told Fox News. “It has been informed in different schools through New York City that garbage boats, pop stops are found in children’s parks in schools and their surroundings.”

The DEA’s laboratory in New York discovered that the “garbage cans” found in and around New York contained cocaine, Tarentino said.
The authorities house any evidence of a lot of fentanyl in the “garbage boats,” he said it is only a matter of time before the concessionaires at the street level begin to mix the opioid with cocaine and colorful receptacle package, Hey said.
However, in 2023, there were reports of fentanyl capsules within the “Trash Can” capsules that were found by students of private schools in a Brooklyn playground. The drugs were found in the Children’s Park Crispus Attucks in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, the New York Post reported at that time.

In Fort Greene, Brooklyn, multicolors “trash can” were found in a park that same year, according to a warning of Fort Greene Conservancy at that time. They were found in the courtyard of the park and on a grass.
“The novelty of the packaging is attractive. It is distinctive,” said the DEA in its 2021 warning. “And like any other product, selling drugs is in many senses of marketing.”
At the time the capsules were found in the Brooklyn Park, the parents of the drugs stored in the small striking containers were notified.
“We remind the children of the class rule that we only collect things done by nature and, in particular, some things that are not made by nature such as these ‘small garbage cans’ can have poison in them and that children should never touch them, just inform adults (sic) immediately,” the notice said.

The DEA is still concerned about the packaging trend, Tarentino said.
It is “definitely attractive to young people. It is definitely a brand’s brand or marketing scheme,” he said. “We are very worried that this happens in our schools and in our communities.”
Capsules also attract dealers.
They are thicker and durable than other containers, the DEA said, making them attractive to drug pushers. In addition, they are easier to smuggled, they are less likely to break once inside the human body and sustain the climatic conditions of bad bad such as rain, instead of small plastic bags.

The New York Police Department told Fox News Digital: “We have seen this packaging.” New York Police does not maintain data in the ITELF packaging, said a police spokesman.

Since January, the DEA in New York has assumed 7,342 pounds of cocaine and 365 pounds of fentanyl, or that 230 pounds were pills. The DEA seized 2.5 million pills with fentanyl. In general, the DEA has seized more than 13.5 million pills and more than 2,132 pounds of fentanyl dust.
These seizures represent at least 81 million mortal doses, the agency told Fox News Digital.
