Head of the Government of the caregiver and leader of 2023 coup d’etat wins the presidential race, according to the provisional results.
Gabon’s military leader Brice Oligui Nguema has won the country’s presidential elections, according to the provisional results.
The Interior Ministry said on Sunday that Nguema, who directed a 2023 military coup, had assured about 90 percent of the votes.
His main rival, Alain Claude Bilie-by-Nze, had won about three percent of Saturday’s vote, according to the initial results.
Participation was 70.40 percent.
Nguema, who had been fundamental to finish 55 years of dynastic government of the Bongo family, was widely expected to win the race of eight candidates.
The day of the elections, Bilie-by-Nze warned about the problems of “potential” duration of the counting, but Nguema said that the electoral process was “transparent.”
