Measles cases underreported, funding cuts impacting response, scientist says

Texas measles cases are not represented and the response by the centers for disease control and prevention is affected by the recent fund cuts, said a scientist.

“We believe it is a large number of cases that are not reported and do not report,” Dr. Ir. David Sugerman, the main scientist of the CDC, said during a meeting of the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee on Tuesday.

“When working very closely with our colleagues in Texas, when speaking with families, they can mention previous cases that have recovered and have never received evidence. Other families that may have cases and never sought treatment,” he said.

“They are mobilizing the resources they have and transferring to other measles domains, transferring them from other regions to region one in particular,” said Sugerman.

Measles cases have continued to increase in Texas since the outbreak began at the end of January.

State health officials reported 561 cases confirmed in 23 counties on Tuesday, an increase of 20 as of April 11.

Gaines County, the center of the outbreak in western Texas, now represents almost 65% of the total cases of the State.
