Michigan has reported a measles outbreak in the state.
The Department of Health and Human Services of Michigan (MDHHS) and the Oakland County Health Division confirmed their first measles case in Oakland County on March 14.
The department announced on April 17 a separate outbreak in Montcalm County, after three cases were confirmed.

This is the first measles outbreak in Michigan since 2019, with eight total cases detected throughout the state in 2025.

An outbreak refers to an incidence of three or more cases that share a source of infection, according to the centers for disease control and prevention.
Measles outbreaks have been identified in seven other US states. This year, including Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and California, according to the health departments of the States.

Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Chief Medical Executive of MDHHS, wrote in a statement that Michigan’s outbreak “emphasizes how contagious measles is and how fast it can extend.”

“The MMR vaccine (measles, paper and rubella) remains our best defense, and two doses of MMR sacrifice 97% protection against measles,” he said.
“We urge all Michigan residents to verify their vaccination records to make sure they are updated with the MMR vaccine.”

According to the reports, the Montcalm County outbreak is linked to a continuous and bigger outbreak in Ontario, Canada.
The MDHHS confirmed that as of April 17, there are no new public exhibition sites to inform.

Measles is very contagious, special for those who are not vaccinated, since most cases throughout the country have occurred in children not vaccinated and school age.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, red and aqueous eyes, nasal secretion and an eruption that begins in the face and then spreads to the rest of the body.
The symptoms can appear seven to 14 days after the exhibition, MDHHS shared, reiterating that the best way to prevent infection is vaccination.

“MDHHS and MMDHD strongly encourage people 1 year or more who have not received the MMR vaccine to do it immediately to protect themselves and others,” the department advised.
