One Georgia deputy killed, second wounded during traffic stop shooting

The deputy of a Sheriff was killed and a second injured in a shooting duration a traffic stop near Augusta, Georgia, on Saturday night, authorities said.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to CBS News that the mortal shooting occurred in the interstatal 20 on the outskirts of Augusta. The suspect, identified as James Blake Montgomery, was generally.

The names of the deputies were not launched immediately. The injured deputy was hospitalized in a critical condition, said the Sheriff’s office.

The circumstances that led to the shooting were not yet clear.

The suspect was in a caravan near Milla 194 score in Belair Road, Columbia County agents told CBS WRDW TV affiliate.

The helicopters and drones were in the air while the authorities work to capture Montgomery, the deputies said.

In a statement published on social networks, the governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, wrote that he and his family were “praying for the loved ones and colleagues of the Sheriffs of Columbia County, a deputy who has fallen into the line of duty, as well as his law fellow, the officer of the law, while protecting his companions of Georgians. Respect and appreciation.
