Athletics was far from being the only baseball team in Sacramento, California, receiving criticism at the beginning of the season.
The organization of minor leagues in the city generated some heat last week.
The Sacramento River Cats were scheduled to participate in a recent tradition of lower league baseball, changing their team for a period of time to promote their alternative identity. For example, the Somerset Patriots played as Jersey’s diners, and Lehight Valley’s Ironpigs are ready to compete like Lehight Valley tomato cake, to name a few.

River Cats were ready to play as the Gold Diggers sacrament, apparently a setback to California’s gold fever. The city of Sacramento was a port of gold miners at the end of the 1840s and became a community and incorporated into California in 1850.
“Inspired by the regional history of California’s gold fever, this new identity offers a connection with the significant impact of this era where Sacramento grew the city closest to the gold fields,” the team said in a press release on Thursday, through the Sacrament.

The team launched a video that showed the name of the team, but also leaned into an old trope, since it showed two women with dollar signs in their eyes when they saw a player.
The video, which has since been eliminated from the social media pages of the team, caused outrage and the organization reversed its decision on the name.
Sacramento Bee columnist, Robin Epley, torn the change of brand as a “misogynist joke about women.”

“Our recent marketing campaign for an alternative identity clearly lost the brand,” the team said in a statement. “Our intention was to make creative reference to the rich history of Sacramento and Gold Country, but our approach was incorrect, and we regret the error. We will no longer use this identity.”
