Space Force commander in Greenland fired after Vance visit

The American army withdrew the commander from an American military base in Greenland on Thursday, confirmed a spokesperson for the space force, two weeks after the vice president JD Vance He visited the installation Amid the impulse of President Trump to take care of the island controlled by Danish.

Hours before, Military.com reported that the now commander of the Pituffick space base, Colonel Susannah Meyers, distanced himself from Vance’s comments at the base in an email to the staff. The Defense Department confirmed that Meyers had written the email.

“I do not suppose to understand the current politics, but what I know is that the groups of the US administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Fridays do not reflect the Pituffik spatial base,” Meyers wrote in the email.

Pentagon spokesman, Sean Parnell, shared the Military.com article on X on Thursday night and wrote: “The actions to undermine the chain of command or to subvert the agenda of President Trump will not be tolerated in the Department of Defense.”

A spokesperson for the space force said Meyers was eliminated by Colonel Kenneth Klock for “loss of confidence in his ability to lead.” “The commanders are expected to adhere to the highest behavior standards, especially as it relates to non -partisan trace in the performance of their duties,” added the spokesman.

Vance visited the Pitufik Space Base along with the second lady Usha Vance at the end of March, where he hears criticized Denmark’s leadership of the Semiautónoma Island, claiming that the NATO country “has not done a good job by the people of Greenland” and “not being invested in the security architecture.” Vance suggested that the Greenland could seek the independence of Denmark and “we will have conversations with the people of Greenland from there.” He said he did not believe that military force was needed to take care of the island, echoing the statements of Mr. Trump.

The base is now supervised by Colonel Shawn Lee, according to the spokesman.

Located in the northwest part of Greenland, the Pituffik spatial base is the northernmost installation of the US army, which dates back to the cold war.

Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in taking control of Greenland, citing Conerns of National Security, despite the rejection of political leaders both in Greenland and in Denmark. About 85% of Greenlands do not want to join the United States, according to a Recent survey.
