Syria’s first wheat shipment since al-Assad ouster points to recovery | Business and Economy News

Merchants say that Syria has depended largely on land imports of neighbors this year.

A ship that transported Trigo arrived at the port of Latakia in Syria, the first installment since former President Bashar Al-Assad was expelled in December, the government said, since it pushes to boost a devastated economy by almost the war of war.

Merchants say Syria has greatly trusted this year in land imports of neighbors.

The officials of the new government led by the interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa say that although the imports of wheat and other basic concepts are not subject to sanctions of the United States or the United Nations, the challenge in obtaining the sale of the sale of the sale of the sale for the sale of agreements has a death agreement.

The Syrian general authority of land edges and mine said in a statement that the ship had 6,600 tons of wheat. He did not identify the nationality or fate of the ship, but a regional basic merchant told the Reuters news agency that it was from Russia.

Russia and Iran were the main military and economic sponsors of Syria under Al-Assad. They previously tested most of Syria’s wheat and oil products, but stopped after the opposition fighters swept the triumphant country and Al-Assad fled to Moscow.

The border authority of Syria described the shipment “a clear indication of the start of a new phase of economic recovery in the country”, adding that it should pave the way for more arrivals of vital supplies.

The Al-Sharaa government firmly focuses on economic recovery after 14 years of conflict and also has efforts to open travel routes to the country.

The majority of international airlines suspended the operations towards and from Damascus in 2012 in the midst of the violent repression of the Syrian government against the protests that began in 2011 and the subsequent civil war that attracted multiple external actors.

However, in January 2024, several airlines resumed the service at the Damascus International Airport after an announcement of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority that international flights would be accepted.

On Saturday, a flight of Syrian passengers left Sunday for the United Arab Emirates (EAU), marking the resumption of air trips between the two countries.

A UN official said Saturday that Syrian authorities should also the economic recovery process, without waiting for Western sanctions under the Al-Assad rule.

“Waiting for the sanctions to be lifted anywhere,” Abdallah told Dardari, regional head of the Arab States of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), to the AFP news agency in an interview in Damascus.

When Dardari said that this process should include “projects … that directly affect citizens”, the provision of services by civil society, partly in education and “the rapid improvement of public services.”

“People need to feel the improvement quickly … as special in such a difficult period,” he said. “With a clear vision and well -defined priorities, once the sanctions rise, the funds will flow towards Syria.”

Some countries, including USS, have said they would expect to see how new authorities exercise their power and guarantee human rights before lifting sanctions, opting for specific and temporal exemptions.
