Texas Greg Abbott governor, a Republican, signed a School Choice bill on Saturday that will assign $ 1 billion for a coupon program that allows parents to use public funds to pay the registration of their children’s private school.
The implementation of the programs limits a one -year effort of Republicans who have been reading for school choice. The supporters of the coupons have focused for a long time in Texas, where the previous efforts failed in the middle of the resistance of the Rural Democrats and Republicans.
Last month, President Donald Trump asked state legislators before a key vote on the bill to finally send the measure to the Abbott desk. The Texas Senate approved Bill 2 of the Senate by a vote of the 19-12 party on April 24 after the State Representatives Chamber approved the bill for a vote of 86-63 the previous week.
“When I postulated for re -election in 2022, I promised school choice for Texas families,” Abbott said before signing the bill in the governor’s mansion. “Today we fulfill that promise.”

Abbott joined Lieutenant Governor, then Patrick, the state president of the House of Representatives, Dustin Burrows, the author of the state bill and state senator Brandon Creighton, the American senator John Cornyn, the defenders of the election of the school and the students and their families.

The supporters of the bill say that it will give parents more options to allow them to get their children out of low -performance public schools in favor of public alternative elections or private schools.

The Democrats and Republicans in the rural districts that have criticized the program argue that it will extract the financial resources of Texas public school students and subsidize the private education of rich families.

As of next school year, families can receive $ 10,000 per year to help pay the registration of their children’s private school or the costs of home education and virtual learning programs. Children with disabilities can qualify for up to $ 30,000 per year.
The program will have a $ 1 billion limit for the first year and will cover up to 90,000 students. But by 2030, it could cost up to $ 4.5 billion per year.
