The deadline to get your REAL ID is fast approaching — here’s what you need to know

Due to a security law approved 20 years ago, many Americans are now requested to update their driver’s license or identification cards to become real compatible with ID, or could not address US flights.

With the deadline that is quickly approaching on May 7, some conservatives have asked President Donald Trump to eliminate the inconvenient requirement that they say violates civil liberties.

What is real identification and why does it matter?

On May 7, federal agencies, including transportation management (TSA), will no longer accept driving licenses or identification cards that do not have a star in one of the upper corners to represent their identification verification. To become real verified by ID, applicants must provide additional verification information such as Social Security numbers.

Flyers that do not have a real identification verification in their license should plan to use a passport, a passport card, a permanent resident card, military identification or improved driver’s license sacrifice by some states.

Will travelers be rejected at the airport without real identification?

The TSA says that the “gradual application” will begin on May 7, but it is not clear if that means rejecting adequate documentation or submitting the issue to additional security detection.

The National Security Department (DHS) said in a frequent question on its website that travelers without “a real ID license or an acceptable alternative from May 7, 2025 will not be allowed through the security control point.”

In a federal rule established this year, the TSA says that its “gradual approach” could last two years, with the potential to issue warnings to people without real identification verification.

Access to other federal and nuclear central facilities will also require real identification, according to the DHS.

How is a real identification obtained?

Drivers who have recently renewed their driver’s license can already have a real identification. Check the star in the upper right or left corner. Otherwise, see with your local office of the Motorized Vehicle Department on how to obtain a real identification or make an appointment to obtain a new license.

You will need documentation to show your full legal name, date of birth, social security number and legal status, as well as two management tests. If you do not have your Social Security card, you can provide a piece of Wo Pay with your name and social security number.

Why is this happening?

The Congress approved and President George W. Bush signed the real identification law in 2005 after the September 11 commission warned that it was too easy for bad actors to obtain a driver’s license.

The implementation of the law has been affected by the delays in obtaining the 50 states and the US territories to implement the new requirements and begin to issue an advanced identification, which is the estimated cost of the federal government $ 11 billion in 2007.

The deadline of 2020 was delayed several times due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The senior TSA official, Adam Stahl, recently said in an announcement that real identification “reinforces security by making fraud identifications more difficult to falsify, frustrating criminals and terrorists.”

What is the reaction?

Some on the right have cried badly and questioned why, if the previous administrations have delayed the implementation, it is now necessary.

When the Secretary of National Security, Kristi, calls a video that slows down the Americans of the deadline of May 7, the former governor of Alaska and Vice President, Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin replied: “Or what?

Palin continued: “Other administrations delayed this real identification requirement and waving. Is it curious why its implementation is essential now? And who came up with this?”

The representative Thomas Massie, R-Ky., He argued in an X publication: “While the pilots are blocked and there is not a single weapons, why do you care who flies has government permission?

Massie Tok Shots in Trump in a follow -up publication: “True identification is an overreach of the patriotic law of the George Bush 2005, extracting completely that it did not hardly strive to Trump in office. Let me guess: is you playing 4D Chess and should it only with him?”

Trump Ally Mark Alford representative, Republican of Mo., rebuked the real identification critics in his own public statement.

“The Royal ID law was approved in 2005, 20 years ago! It is time for everyone to stop dragging their feet. Quuit moving through social networks, stopping complaining, gathering their information and reaching the DMV to their real Iday,” said Alford.

The White House could not be contacted immediately to comment on criticism of real identification.
