The measure allows Ukraine to further delay the elections, despite the pressure for a presidential vote of the United States and Russia.
The Parliament of Ukraine has voted to extend martial law and military mobilization for another three months, prolonging war measures until at least August 6.
The legislator Yaroslav Zheleznyak said that the extension of the martial law approved by a vote of 357-1, while a measure to maintain the mobilization of troops was approved 356-1.
According to the Constitution of Ukraine, the elections cannot be held during the martial law, a provision that remains in force despite external calls, even Russia and the United States, for a schedule on a future vote.
The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose five -year mandate would originally end in May last year, and raised the temporary elections of the government.
In reaction to the extension of the martial law, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Kyiv or tried to “preserve its unstable structure.”
In February, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, described Zelenskyy as a “dictator without elections”, which led the Ukrainians to meet around their leader and increase their focus ratings.
As the peace conversations led by the Trump administration created hopes of a high fire and any choice, some politicians of the Ukrainian opposition have become more vocal in their criticisms of Zenskyy. Even so, there is broad support to maintain martial law.
Petro Poroshenko, former president and leader of the country’s largest opposition party, said there was no doubt that martial law should be prolonged, but accused Zenskyy of trying to use the measure to underpin their powers.
“I want to emphasize that we should recognize the obvious: the Government has begun to abuse martial law, using it not only to defend the country, but also to build an authoritarian regime,” Poroshenko said the parliamentary debates.
Uncertainty about the moratorium of the energy strike
The vote of the martial law occurred when the heavy combat and air attacks continued between Russia and Ukraine, now in the 38th month of exhausting war.
A Russian drone attack during the night in the port city of the Negro Sea Odessa wounded three people and damaged houses, while several air attacks and artillery of the morning killed the person at least in the southern city of Kherson, according to Ukrainian.
Meanwhile, the Russian army said its forces captured the Eastern Ukrainian village of Kalynove, another small advance claimed in the Donetsk region.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also accused Ukraine or carried out six attacks against the country’s energy infrastructure, despite a moratorium of 30 days of mutual day in such strikes.
