US to screen social media of visa applicants who spent time in Gaza | Gaza News

The Cable of the US State Department.

The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, ordered the State Department to review the social media accounts for the visas of the United States that have visited the Gaza Strip in the last 18 years, according to an internal cable seen by the Reuters news agency.

The cable covers all students and tourists of visas in the United States and non -immigrants who have passed “any period of time in an official or diplomatic capacity” in Gaza as of January 1, 2007.

Employees and volunteers of non -governmental organizations will also be subject to the evaluation of the United States.

If the review of social networks discovers any “possible derogatory information related to security problems”, then the US visa application will be presented for an investigation between agencies on whether the applicant could represent a national security risk, according to the cable.

The cable was signed by Rubio, who previously told the media that his office has revoked more than 300 visas since the beginning of this year. They include students’ visas that have criticized Israel’s war against Gaza, even thought that the United States Constitution protects the freedom of expression of any person in the United States, regardless of their visa state.

The Trump administration has previously said that students’ actions represent a threat to the foreign policy of the United States. The president also has tasks of the struggle for the same universities, which have the site of important protests from the war in Gaza, on October 7, 2023.

Trump’s last battle is with Harvard University. The president froze more than $ 2 billion in federal funds for the university, after he refused to make policy changes requested by his administration.
